If you want to maintain the integrity of your landscape design, you have to gain an understanding of pests that could pose a threat to your plants, bushes, and trees. Keep reading to learn more about some common Arizona landscaping pests and what you can do to avoid them.

Agave Weevil

These non-flying pests munch on leaves, and leave bacterial rot that can cause leaves to wilt or wrinkle. Once the bacterial rot starts to spread, it puts the plant at a great risk. If the agave weevil lays eggs on a plant and leaves behind the bacteria, you must remove and destroy it as soon as possible to prevent issues with other plants. These pests are black, grow to be about an inch long, and travel between plants by walking on the ground. Agave weevils are difficult to control, yet broad-spectrum insecticides or grub killer can be effective.

Cactus Longhorn Beetle

These beetles often have antennae that mirror their own body in length. Their plants of choice are cacti, such as chollas, prickly pears, and the barrel cactus. A cactus longhorn beetle infestation can keep these plants from growing to their full potential. It could also kill certain species. Believe it or not, hand-picking the insects off your plants is the best way to keep then under control due to their commonly small populations.

Palo Verde Webworm

Extending to only ¼ inch long in adulthood, these pests gravitate toward palo verde leaves. Since this plant is extremely durable, however, palo verde webworms do not often cause significant damage to your landscape, and birds and lizards commonly feed on them.

Leafcutter Bees

Appearing gray or brown in color, these bees are attracted to a wide variety of plants. Although the damage they cause can be unslightly, they do not cause a lot of harm to the plants. In addition, these bees are important pollinators, so it is advised to leave them alone unless absolutely necessary.
